A lighting system (100) for controlling a lighting device (110) by a control device (102) is disclosed. The lighting system (100) comprises the lighting device (110) and the control device (102) comprising a first user interface (104) arranged for receiving a first user input. The lighting system (100) further comprises a proximity detector (106) arranged for detecting proximity (114) between the control device (102) and the lighting device (110). A processor (108) is arranged for adjusting a control parameter of the lighting device (110) based on the first user input if the proximity (114) is detected within a predefined period of time after receiving the first user input. This enables a user to control the lighting device (110) by bringing the control device (102) in proximity (114) of the lighting device, which results in a simple and intuitive way of controlling one or more lighting devices (110), and it removes the need for the user to indicate the target lighting device to be controlled on the control device.
