Embodiment Construction

[0013] The following detailed description is merely exemplary in nature and is not intended to limit the invention or the application and uses of the invention. Furthermore, there is no intention to be bound by any theory presented in the background or the following detailed description.

[0014] Various non-limiting embodiments of aircraft and off-aircraft speaker systems are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the aircraft includes vibration actuators (eg, electromagnetic driver coils, piezoelectric actuators) mounted to the aircraft skin. The vibration exciter is within the plate on the outer surface of the membrane, so no openings or external protrusions are required to mount the vibration exciter. The controller sends commands to the vibration actuator to cause the membrane to vibrate according to the desired audible content. The vibrations of the membrane couple with the air in the aircraft's surrounding environment, producing sounds audible to people in the vicinit...

Abstract

Aircraft, aircraft exterior speaker system, and method of projecting sound waves from an exterior of an aircraft are provided. An aircraft includes an outer skin membrane, a vibration actuator, and a controller. The outer skin membrane has an exterior surface that defines an exterior boundary of the aircraft. The vibration actuator is coupled for common vibration with the outer skin membrane. The controller is operatively coupled with the vibration actuator and is configured to generate a command for the vibration actuator based on audible content to be projected from the exterior surface. The controller is further configured to transmit the command to the vibration actuator. The vibration actuator is configured to vibrate in response to receiving the command.

Description

technical field [0001] The technical field relates generally to aircraft having external speakers, and more particularly to aircraft having external speakers including vibration exciters coupled to an outer skin of the aircraft. Background technique [0002] Conventional passenger aircraft include a skin that defines the exterior of the aircraft. Such conventional aircraft generally do not include external audio speakers due to the difficulty of including conventional audio speakers in an aircraft. For example, conventional speakers could be mounted on the outside of the membrane, but this configuration increases aerodynamic drag and reduces the range / efficiency of the aircraft. Similarly, such conventional speakers can be mounted on the inside of the membrane, but openings are required to expose the conventional speaker cone to the environment. Such openings are difficult to produce and reduce the structural integrity of the membrane. Furthermore, such conventional speak...
