Embodiment Construction

[0016] Conventional near-eye display systems are sold with a set of frames and cannot be mounted to any frame. Such a system is not desired by consumers. Many consumers require custom frames that accommodate each consumer's varying pupillary distance (PD). Thus, those consumers cannot use the near-eye display system because the system is not sold with a frame adapted to their particular PD.

[0017] Further, each consumer has a different pupillary distance (PD) between the respective eyes. PD is the distance between the centers of the individual pupils of the consumer's eyes. Having the correct PD between the lenses of a near-eye display system is extremely important, especially for prescription optics, since each lens has an optical center. The optical center of the lens gives consumers the most realistic vision and should be directly in front of the pupils of consumers. Because the set of frames sold with conventional near-eye display systems is limited to a few types, c...

Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention relate to a head-mounted device (HMD) capable of adjusting lenses for a particular customer. In some exemplary embodiments, the HMD enables up to three degrees of freedom lenses that align with the consumer's pupils. For example, an HMD includes an actuation device or a rotatable disk, both of which are slidably engaged with at least one elongate member. The ends of the elongated member are coupled to the mirror / lens such that actuation of the actuator or rotation of the disk translates the elongated member along an axis generally aligned with the consumer's pupillary distance (PD). Additionally, the elongate member includes a mirror / lens interface to which the lens is coupled. The mirror / lens interface is slidably and rotatably coupled to the elongated member, thus providing an additional degree of freedom for movement of the lens.

Description

technical field [0001] Near-eye display systems are becoming more and more common in the market. Such near-eye display systems are typically mounted directly to, or integrated with, eyeglass frames that may or may not include actual eyeglass lenses. Background technique [0002] For example, U.S. Design Patent D659,741 (hereinafter "the D'741 patent") depicts an exemplary eyeglass frame using an integrally mounted near-eye display system. As seen in the D'741 patent, the near-eye display system is mounted directly to the right temple / earpiece portion of the eyeglass frame. Also, U.S. Design Patent D664,185 (hereinafter "the D'185 patent") illustrates an eyeglass frame without lenses, including an integrally mounted near-eye display system. Unfortunately, near-eye display systems, such as the near-eye display systems described above, require consumers to wear a specific frame that is sold at the same time as the near-eye display system. Thus, such frames cannot accommodate...
