The method comprises the following steps: separating video data from audio/video data; packaging prestored image information of a reference image into the video data, so that packaged video data is obtained; during display of the packaged video data in a designated area, acquiring image data and recording a first acquisition time for the image data; and according to the image data and the first acquisition time for the image data, determining whether a video being played is buffered or not. The method and device provided by the invention has the advantages that the image information of the reference image is packaged in the video data, the image data is acquired and the acquisition time for the image data is recorded during the display of the video data, and whether the video data is buffered or not is determined based on the image data and the acquisition time; and an audio/video cache queue need not be detected during the process, and the determination is carried out through the currently played video data, so that a more accurate and real-time determination result can be achieved.
