The method comprises the steps of obtaining a mapping table of a FAT file allocation table; according to the mapping table, obtaining a sector having an idle cluster record and occupied by the FAT file allocation table; and searching for idle cluster items in the sector having the idle cluster record, and according to the idle cluster items, calculating the position of an idle cluster. According to the scheme, the sector having the idle cluster record in the FAT file allocation table can be directly found through the mapping table, so that the sector having the idle cluster record is prevented from being searched for from an initial sector of the FAT file allocation table one by one, the search time ofthe idle cluster is shortened, and the search efficiency of the idle cluster is improved.
