Embodiment Construction

[0024] The expandable intervertebral body implant systems disclosed herein are discussed in terms of medical devices for treating musculoskeletal disorders, and more specifically, expandable intervertebral body implant systems and related methods for treating the spine and exemplary embodiments of related methods of use. It is contemplated that the implant system may provide, for example, fusion, decompression, restoration of sagittal plane balance, and resistance to subsidence into tissue, such as the surface of the vertebral endplates. It is further contemplated that the system comprises an intervertebral body implant that expands after insertion into the disc space and has features such as: facilitating insertion into the disc space such that less bone removal, shrinkage, The nerve roots are decompressed, and expanded to restore sagittal balance, providing more expansion anteriorly versus dorsally in eg lumbar applications. In some embodiments, a passive (eg, non-steerable...

Abstract

A device includes an upper endplate having an engagement surface, an inner surface and first projections extending from the inner surface. The first projections each include a first 5 inclined surface. A lower endplate includes an engagement surface, an inner surface and second projections extending from the inner surface. The second projections each include a second inclined surface. A wedge is positioned between the endplates. The wedge includes first mating parts that engage the first inclined surfaces and second mating parts that engage the second inclined surfaces. The wedge is movable relative to the endplates to move the 10 device between a first configuration having a first height between the engagement surfaces and a second configuration having an increased second height between the engagement surfaces. Methods of use are disclosed. -0 C(N (N - ( 0 (000 coo a., coo CoD Cj (0 coo cuc 00o0 coo co Uco co 00 co C Cj Cou c

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to medical devices, systems, and methods for treating musculoskeletal disorders, and more particularly, to an expandable intervertebral body implant system and method for treating the spine. Background technique [0002] Spinal conditions such as degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, osteoporosis, spondylolisthesis, stenosis, scoliosis and other curvature abnormalities, kyphosis, tumors and fractures can be caused by a variety of factors, including injury and aging trauma, disease and degenerative conditions. Spinal disorders often cause symptoms including pain, nerve damage, and partial or complete loss of mobility. For example, after a disc collapse, severe pain and discomfort can occur due to the pressure on the nerves and spine. [0003] Nonsurgical treatments such as medication, rehabilitation, and exercise may be effective but may not reduce the symptoms associated with these conditions. Surgical ...
