Method and System for Whole Body Bone Removal and Vascular Visualization in Medical Image Data

A method and apparatus for whole body bone removal and vasculature visualization in medical image data, such as computed tomography angiography (CTA) scans, is disclosed. Bone structures are segmented in the a 3D medical image, resulting in a bone mask of the 3D medical image. Vessel structures are segmented in the 3D medical image, resulting in a vessel mask of the 3D medical image. The bone mask and the vessel mask are refined by fusing information from the bone mask and the vessel mask. Bone voxels are removed from the 3D medical image using the refined bone mask, in order to generate a visualization of the vessel structures in the 3D medical image.

Intervertebral milling instrument

An intervertebral milling instrument for removing calcified fibrous cartilage (CFC) from adjacent vertebrae during spinal fusion or spacer implantation surgery. The milling instrument includes a grinding wheel carried within a guide housing sized to fit closely into the intervertebral space, and to expose the grinding wheel on opposite sides thereof for controlled removal of CFC layers from adjacent cortical end plates. The grinding wheel is rotatably driven as by attachment to a surgical drill, preferably to include saline supply to and suction removal from the grinding site. The controlled removal of CFC layers is limited to about 100 to about 250 microns, thereby avoiding exposing the cortical end plates without excessive bone removal. The instrument is conveniently provided in a kit having multiple guide housings and associated grinding wheels of different sizes to fit into different intervertebral spaces.

Method and an Apparatus for Automatic Bone Removal

The present invention relates to a method for automatically removing bones and trimming a product such as fish fillets, where the fillets are in an under cooled state. The under cooling makes the fillets sufficiently stiff to remove pin pones and portion a fillet before or after skinning the fillet in a relative still position providing better cutting than conventional methods. This provides more efficiency than prior art methods as well as increasing the value of the product due to less gaping and dehydration of the product. The method of the present invention further provides possibilities for grading of products processed with the three dimensional scanning and digital imaging of the products.

Pin Bone Removal Apparatus

A pin bone removal device that provides a plurality of fixed members arranged substantially in side-by-side orientation. The invention also comprises a plurality of moveable members also substantially arranged in a side-by-side orientation. In one aspect, the fixed members and moveable members collectively form a stack of members in which a moveable member is positioned adjacent each fixed member. In this aspect, a linear drive is operatively connected to each of the moveable members and is configured to cause oscillating movement of each moveable member to cause the moveable members to contact the adjacent fixed member. This movement causes pinch points to be created and released between the fixed and moveable members. As the fillet of fish is moved along the stack of members, the pin bones are caught at each pinch point and then released.

A method for performing an acetabular arthroplasty in an acetabulum of an ilium may include locating an iliac canal of the ilium. The iliac canal extends from the surface of the acetabulum generally toward a portion of the iliac ridge. An impacting step impacts a non-rotating bone removal tool aligned along the iliac canal such that the non-rotating bone removal tool removes bone within the iliac canal and forms a bone void. Another step secures a fixation implant within the canal void. An acetabular implant is installed within the acetabulum over the fixation implant.
