Methods of using primer molecules for enhancing the mechanical performance of tissue adhesives and sealants

The present invention concerns novel methods for enhancing the mechanical performance of tissue adhesives and sealants which comprises employing a primer molecule in association with a tissue adhesive or sealant, wherein the primer molecule serves to enhance the strength of the interface between the tissue and the adhesive matrix. The primer molecules described herein function to interact with a protein present in the tissue, thereby altering its characteristics to make it more amenable to bonding with the adhesive matrix. Primer molecules may be applied to the tissue independently from the tissue adhesive or sealant or may be mixed with the tissue adhesive or sealant prior to application to the tissue.

Layer system, and process for producing a layer system

On account of their form of coating, layer systems according to the prior art often only have a low level of attachment to the substrate. The layer may then become detached in the event of high mechanical loads being applied to the components. The layer system according to the invention has separately produced anchoring means which are more strongly attached to the substrate than the attachment of the layer to the substrate.

Latching quick-connect connector

A method is presented to allow a quick, positive attachment of a fastener to a module body. The module body and the fastener each have interrupted screw sections to connect with a partial turn. A latching mechanism, such as a pawl and cog arrangement, can provide a positive lock when the interrupted screw threads are fully engaged. A mechanism such as tab lever can be used to disengage the positive lock to easily remove the module. The controlled traverse over a known thread pitch allows the use of a compressible face on the fastener with a fixed compression and a repeatable, tight connection.

Hard tissue anchors and delivery devices

The present invention provides devices, systems and methods for anchoring medical devices to hard tissues, such as bones or bony structures, particularly vertebrae. By anchoring these medical devices directly to the surrounding hard tissue, the devices are anchored closer to the source of treatment. This provides additional stability and reduces migration of the device at the treatment site. Also, by attaching to hard tissue rather than soft tissue, a stronger attachment is often able to be made.

Dual-functioning mechanism for startup during winding of web material and for splicing during unwinding

A tail end of a web is attached to a winding core via a two-component mechanism having a core component attached to the core and a web component attached to the web, the two components being attached to each other in releasable fashion. The mechanism assists startup of winding. Upon completion of unwinding, the web component detaches from the core component to expose a region of adhesive on a part of the web component that extends from the tail end of the web. The tail end thus can be spliced to a leading end of another web by attaching the leading end to the exposed adhesive on the web component.

Ultrasensitive olfactory system fabrication with doped aerogels

An array of sensor elements is formed by the incorporation of sensing materials into porous structures, creating sensing systems with extremely large surface areas with sensing molecules attached to mimic the large number of cilia of an olfactory system. In each sensor element, the sensing material or molecules are attached to spacer molecules or groups, which are attached to linker molecules or groups, which are attached to the porous substrate material. More specifically, a porphyrin doped aerogel material is used. The porphyrin sensing material is attached to the aerogel throughout its high surface area pore space. The porphyrin is covalently bonded to the silica network of the aerogel with a triethoxysilyl group linker that covalently attaches to the aerogel, and an alkyl group spacer.
