Process for pyrolyzing carbonaceous feedstocks

The present invention concerns a process and an apparatus for thermal conversion of biomass and organic wastes. According to the invention, the feedstock is fed into a fluidized-bed reactor, wherein the feed is converted at an elevated temperature under the influence of particulate matter kept in a fluidized state by a fluidizing gas, the particulate matter is transferred from the reactor to a regenerator for regeneration and then recirculated to the reactor after the regeneration, and the converted hydrocarbon products are recovered from the reactor. Both the reactor and the regenerator comprise risers having an axially annular cross section and being equipped with multi-inlet cyclones for the separation of particulate matter. By means of the invention, it is possible to producer pyrolysis oil, the quality of which is higher than that of oil produced with the processes of the prior art. The incorporation of multi-inlet cyclones into the reactor configuration reduces gas velocities, reduces the physical size of the cyclone and shortens the residence time of gases in the cyclone.

System and method for medical monitoring and treatment through cosmetic monitoring and treatment

A system and method that scans areas of a human body to identify unattractive characteristics and make cosmetic enhancements is modified for medical monitoring and optionally for treatment. A 3-D model of the exterior surface of the human body is created, and the scanned data is analyzed by characteristics of reflectance and surface topology to identify unhealthy characteristics. Because people will use a cosmetics system widely and frequently, base lines of patients' conditions can be created through frequent monitoring over a long time period, so that potentially dangerous changes from the base line can identified quickly and reported on. When appropriate, precise applications of medications to treat affected areas may be made automatically. Controlled and precisely directed dosages of medications may be applied to reduce the risk of undesirable side effects. Medicines may also be applied over a large area of skin and during a long period of time to achieve desired treatments.

Supercapacitor with high energy density

The energy content of supercapacitor is determined by its capacitance value and working voltage. To attain a high capacitance and a high voltage, several pieces of electrodes and separators are spirally wound with edge sealing to form a bipolar supercapacitor in cylindrical, oval or square configuration. While the winding operation effectively provides a large surface area for high capacitance, the bipolar packaging instantly imparts a unitary roll a minimum working voltage of 5V on using an organic electrolyte. The bipolar roll is a powerful building block for facilitating the assembly of supercapacitor modules. Using containers with multiple compartments, as many bipolar rolls can be connected in series, in parallel or in a combination of the two connections to fabricate integrated supercapacitors with high energy density as required by applications.

Switch for turning off therapy delivery of an active implantable medical device during MRI scans

An MRI-compatible electronic medical therapy system is provided for temporarily preventing current flow through an implanted lead wire in the presence of an induced radio frequency, magnetic, or static field. One or more normally closed switches are disposed in series between the AIMD and the one or more distal electrodes. The switch may be incorporated in the AIMD, lead wire, or within or adjacent to the electrode. The switch remains closed during normal AIMD-related therapy, but temporarily opens in the presence of an induced radio frequency, magnetic, or static field so as to prevent current flow through the electrode and lead wire. The switches prevent current from circulating that could be induced by a medical therapeutic diagnostic device, which can cause overheating of lead wires, excessive currents or temperatures and tissue damage.

Container for disk drives

A shipping container includes a main insert, a top cover and a cardboard or corrugated shell. The container is especially adapted for securing computer disk drives therein. Potential damage to the disk drives is minimized by isolating movement of the disk drives within the container. Each drive is loaded within a compartment defined by surrounding dividers formed on both the top cover and main insert. The overall container height is minimized by incorporating recesses in the inserts that can increase the effective height of exterior cushioning ribs thus reducing the thickness of the floorboard or base member. The incorporation of the recesses results in formation of relatively thin web sections that interconnect base portions of the cushioning ribs to base portions of the dividers.
