A powered rotary knife includes a handle, a blade housing, an annular blade, and a blade bushing for rotatably mounting the blade within the housing. The blade housing includes an inner groove that is operable to receive the blade bushing therein. The blade housing and blade bushing are split in order to expand and receive the blade. The blade includes an outer groove that is also operable to receive the blade bushing. Thus, the blade bushing is spaced between the blade housing and blade and rotatably secures the blade within the blade housing.

A novel human operator safety device is disclosed for use with motorized machines that have a danger zone that includes sharp cutting implements that can potentially cause operator harm. The operator safety device includes an optical or thermal sensor for either processing optically derived information to determine whether an extremity of an operator is within a predetermined proximity of the danger zone of the machine and processing thermal information to determine whether an extremity of an operator is within a predetermined proximity of the danger zone of the machine. If a presence is detected, at least a portion of the machine what may cause operator harm is stopped. For example, a thermal camera, an optical camera, laser or thermal sensor is used for determining whether an extremity of an operator is within a predetermined proximity of the danger zone.

A power operated knife comprises a blade supporting structure supporting an annular blade for rotation about a central axis. The blade and blade supporting structure are engagable along bearing contact locations that are spaced apart in a direction parallel to the axis so that the blade is stabilized both radially and axially as the knife operates. The blade supporting structure comprises a split blade housing member that is radially expandible and contractible to receive the blade. The split blade housing member and blade engage along relatively short lines of bearing contact that serve to minimize friction and blade heating when the knife operates. An apparatus and method for identifying a carcass during meat production. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a band sized to fit around a limb of the carcass and a readable identification tag affixed to the band for remote identification of the carcass. In another embodiment, the apparatus includes a block adapted to couple to a trolley carrying the carcass and a readable identification tag coupled to or embedded in the block. The readable identification tag may be used to read and write information relating to the carcass to a database.

The invention relates to a livestock carcass skin marking device, which includes a tagging unit and a code-spurting unit. The tagging unit reads the livestock skin marking data stored locally or on aserver and generates a corresponding jet printing image. The code-spurting unit includes an ink nozzle, which jets the jet printing image to the livestock carcass skin. Apparatus for high-volume, high speed ultrasonic cutting or slitting comprising a blade having first and second cutting edges suspended from a reciprocating head, cantilevered over a conveyor supporting and advancing the food product, with the blade including first and second cutting edges on respective opposite sides thereof to cut the food product transversely. The head is preferably controlled for automated operation by an electronic controller to reciprocate transversely at a selected speed and a selected frequency within predetermined ranges over food product advancing on the conveyor. The blade preferably oscillates ultrasonically, and preferably at a frequency of approximately 20,000 Hz. The first and second cutting edges are preferably downwardly convergent, defining an included angle greater than 60 degrees and less than 90 degrees. In one particular embodiment, the internal angle is 70 degrees. In another embodiment, the angle is about 60 degrees. The blade may have a linear translating velocity of 25 to 35 inches per second, and more specifically may have a transverse velocity of approximately thirty inches per second. The apparatus may be used in high-speed, high-volume commercial food production operations for automated cutting of cheese products and other food products from large chunks, slabs and the like into smaller portions, and may also be used in other applications.

There is described a control system for an electrically powered saw of the type incorporating a table through which the blade of the saw passes. The control system comprises a clamping mechanism (16, 16a) having clamping members (18, 20) counter-rotatable relative to one another to clamp the blade (4) in use to stop travel of the blade in event of an operator coming into electrical contact with the blade during use of the saw. A device for picking or plucking poultry feathers is provided that includes a sleeve-coupling and, connected or connectable thereto, a plucking plate with receptacles for plucking fingers, which sleeve-coupling is mountable on a drive-shaft for the plucking plate. A meat tenderizer with disposable face plates requires that a fresh face plate be chosen for each use to prevent cross contamination from one use of the tenderizer to the next. The table or tables of the tenderizer head are flat and accept the face plates which may have a flat tenderizing surface or any of several textured tenderizing surfaces. The face plates are intended for a single use. Once used a face plate is discarded. The user selects the appropriate face plate for the task at hand, attaches it to the tenderizer and removes and discards it after use. Since a clean unused face plate is selected for each use, the tenderizer does not have to be washed between uses thereby saving time for the chef and providing a sanitary tenderizing surface for contact with the meat.

A hand-held epilating device capable of increasing plucking efficiency. The epilating device has a housing to be grasped by a hand of a user, and a plucking cylinder carrying at least one set of pinching elements for catching and pinching body hairs therebetween. The plucking cylinder has a longitudinal axis and is driven to rotate about the longitudinal axis to pluck the body hairs from the user's skin. The plucking cylinder is supported to the housing so as to effect a periodical movement relative to the housing within a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis. Thus, the area of the skin covered by the plucking cylinder can have increased chances of being in contact with the pinching elements as the pinching elements move periodically relative to the skin together with the plucking cylinder, thereby improving the plucking efficiency.

A poultry paw cutting apparatus can include a conveyor that conveys a plurality of shackles. Each of the shackles can be adapted to hold a poultry paw. A chain can receive the poultry paws from the shackles at a first location and can convey the poultry paws substantially in unison with the shackles to a second location. The poultry paws can be released from the shackles at the second location. A paw cutting station can be positioned along the chain. A first guide member can be located along the chain substantially between the second location and the paw cutting station. The first guide member can be adapted to press the poultry paws against the chain. A method of cutting a poultry paw is also disclosed.
