Abstract

The invention provides a method for evaluating regional traffic congestion on the basis of speed sampled data. The method includes acquiring vehicle travel data by the aid of vehicular GPS (global positioning systems) or other devices; dividing geographic spaces of corresponding cities into different regions and projecting the acquired data to corresponding regions of maps according to time frames; computing average traffic speeds of the regions in each time frame for all the data projected in the various regions in the time frame; transforming traffic speeds of each effective region in the optional time frames into an index on the basis of minimum values, maximum vales and average values of the traffic speeds of the effective region in all the time frames, and measuring and computing regional congestion degrees to bring convenience for comparative analysis on different time frames and regions. The vehicle travel data contain instantaneous speeds and corresponding geographic locations.Congestion severity degrees can be represented by the indexes.
