Embodiment Construction

[0019] Various embodiments will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts. References to specific examples and implementations are for illustrative purposes, and are not intended to limit the scope of the claims.

[0020] Various embodiments include methods for calibrating a blood pressure measurement device by determining a calibrated diastolic blood pressure from arterial dilatation measurements taken under known pressure conditions corresponding to times when transmural pressure is at or near zero. In some embodiments, the known pressure conditions may include a constant applied back pressure and a controlled change in hydrostatic pressure. The hydrostatic pressure can be varied by adjusting the altitude of the measurement site. Measuring the hydrostatic pressure in the limb at the site and the relatively small counterpressure app...

Abstract

Various embodiments include methods and devices for measuring blood pressure. Various embodiments may include receiving, from one or more arterial measurement sensors, a pulse waveform representing arterial pressure as a function of time for each pulse of a series of blood pressure pulses. The series of blood pressure pulses may be correlated to arterial distension at a measurement location of thearterial measurement sensors on a subject's body. One or more elevations of the measurement location may be received from one or more elevation sensors. At least one pulse in the series of pulses maybe identified that represents a transitional pulse based on one or more characteristics of the at least one pulse. A diastolic blood pressure may be determined based on the at least one identified transitional pulse and elevation measurements that correspond to the one identified pulse.

Description

Background technique [0001] Devices used to measure cardiovascular properties have problems with the measurements themselves interfering with the subject's state, leading to erroneous results. In addition, current cuff-based methods may impart significant physiological impact. In current cuff-based methods, systolic blood pressure is obtained by completely or at least largely compressing an artery, which in most cases is the brachial artery in the upper arm. This arterial compression affects pulse pressure spread and pulse pressure shape, which is only tolerable in the peripheral system. Further, the diastolic pressure comes from measurements taken when the transmural pressure (the pressure difference between the outside and inside of the artery) approaches zero, which means that those measurements were made under abnormal conditions. [0002] Additionally, traditional methods based on inflatable cuffs and measurements performed in a clinical setting may have psychoactive ef...
