Abstract

An overhead electric vehicle charging system (1) includes a charging unit (2) for charging an electric vehicle (5), a charging cable (3) electrically connected to the charging unit (2), a charging connector (4) provided at an end of the cable (3) and is adapted to plug into a charging port of the electric vehicle (5) and a cable management unit (10). The unit (10) includes a control module (101),a cable feeding / retracting mechanism (110) controlled by the control module (101), a cable tensioning mechanism (120) controlled by the control module (101) and at least one sensing means (102) associates with the control module (101). The cable feeding / retracting mechanism (110) allows the cable (3) to be drawn manually, while the sensing means (102) determines if the feed length exceeds a pre-determined value, the cable tensioning mechanism (120) adaptably generates and applies a resistance to counteract further drawing of the cable (3).
