Problems solved by technology

[0002] A known problem with electric camshaft phasers is that the rotor "slips" relative to the stator after the engine is stopped
During operation of the phaser 38 when the portion 98 is not engaged with the receiver 54, the portion 98 is in constant contact with the portion 48, resulting in resistance to the operation of the actuator and constant bending of the lever spring, which reduces the use of the lever spring life

Abstract

A camshaft phaser comprising: a stator for receiving rotational torque from an engine and including a radially inward surface and a slot in the radially inward surface; a rotor non-rotatably connected to the camshaft and to the electric motor and including a first radially outwardly extending protrusion; and a spring non-rotatably connected to the stator and including a first portion disposed in the slot. The electric motor is arranged to rotate the rotor relative to the stator. In the first circumferential position of the rotor relative to the stator: no part of the spring is seated in the recess; and a second part of the spring extends radially inward beyond the radially inward surface. In a second circumferential position of the rotor relative to the stator, the second portion of the spring is seated in the recess.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to an electric camshaft phaser with a spring and detent that locks a rotor into a predetermined position when the engine is shut down. Background technique [0002] A known problem with electric camshaft phasers is that the rotor "slips" relative to the stator after the engine is stopped. For example, immediately or shortly after engine shutdown, due to the lack of inherent resistive torque in an electric camshaft phaser or the lack of inherent friction in an electric camshaft phaser associated with the motor and transmission combination, torque will be transferred in sufficient magnitude to The rotor causes the electric camshaft phaser to slip or shift the rotor relative to the stator by the desired control angle. The rotational direction and magnitude of the residual torque and inherent friction are unpredictable; therefore, the rotation and resulting control angle of the rotor due to the residual torque or inherent fr...
