Embodiment Construction

[0079] The following description focuses on embodiments of the invention applicable to wireless power transfer systems utilizing power transfer methods such as are known in the Qi specification. However, it should be understood that the invention is not limited to this application, but may be applied to many other wireless power transfer systems.

[0080] figure 1 An example of a wireless power transfer system according to some embodiments of the invention is illustrated. The power transfer system includes a power transmitter 101 including (or coupled to) a transmitter coil / inductor 103 . The system also includes a power receiver 105 including (or coupled to) a receiver coil / inductor 107 .

[0081] The system provides electromagnetic power transfer signals that can inductively transfer power from the power transmitter 101 to the power receiver 105 . Specifically, the power transmitter 101 generates an electromagnetic signal that is propagated as magnetic flux by the transm...

Abstract

A wireless power transmitter (101) comprises a driver (201) generating a drive signal for a transmitter coil (103) thereby generating a power transfer signal during power transfer intervals of a repeating time frame comprising at least one power transfer interval and one foreign object detection interval. A test generator (211) generates a test drive signal for a test coil (209) thereby generatingan electromagnetic test signal during foreign object 5 detection intervals. A foreign object detector (207) performs a foreign object detection test in response to a measured parameter for the test drive signal during the foreign object detection intervals. An adapter (213) generates a varying test drive signal for the test coil (209) during an adaptation interval, and determines a test drive signal parameter value in response to the varying test drive signal. The test generator (211) sets a signal property of the test drive 10 signal during at least one foreign object detection interval in response to the test drive signal parameter value.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to foreign object detection in wireless power transfer systems, and in particular, but not exclusively, to foreign object detection for power transmitters providing inductive power transfer to higher powered appliances such as kitchen appliances. Background technique [0002] Most current power products require dedicated electrical contacts to be powered from an external source. However, this tends to be impractical and requires the user to physically insert the connector or otherwise establish physical electrical contact. Typically, power requirements also vary significantly, and most devices are currently provided with their own dedicated power supplies, resulting in the typical user having a large number of different power supplies, each dedicated to a particular device. While using an internal battery may avoid the need for a wired connection to a power source during use, this only provides a partial solution, as the ...
