The escalator is characterized in that the working section at least comprisesan ascending section and a descending section; the relative positions of the step chain and the guide rail on the ascending section and the descending section are different, the step chain and the guide rail are used for adapting to the relative height change between adjacent steps, and compared with the prior art, the ascending section and the descending section share the same return stroke section, so that the stroke of the return stroke section is shortened, and part of related components of the return stroke section are saved; and therefore, the overall operation energy consumption is reduced, and meanwhile the cost of the escalator is properly reduced.
