Embodiment Construction

[0083] As mentioned above, it is important for smart machines to be able to independently detect obstacles and / or automatically perform evasive maneuvers. Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) is a reliable and precise detection technology. In addition, unlike conventional image sensors (e.g., cameras), LIDAR can obtain three-dimensional information by detecting the depth or distance of objects. However, current LIDAR systems have limitations. For example, the energy density within a certain distance from a laser emitter is usually regulated by locally relevant safety policies or regimes. Therefore, the detection range of a LIDAR system using individual laser emitters is limited. Furthermore, individual laser emitters may not be able to generate dense data sets suitable for obtaining an accurate model of the external environment. Therefore, there remains a need for improved techniques for implementing LIDAR systems to achieve lower manufacturing costs while improving the qual...

Abstract

Systems and techniques associated light detection and ranging (LIDAR) applications are described. In one representative aspect, techniques can be used to implement a packaged semi-conductive apparatusis disclosed. The apparatus includes a substrate; a diode die carried by the substrate and positioned to emit an electromagnetic energy beam; and a shell coupled to the substrate to enclose the diodedie. The shell includes an opening or a transparent area to allow the electromagnetic energy beam emitted from the diode die to pass through the shell.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to environmental sensing and, more particularly, to components, systems and techniques associated with light detection and ranging (LIDAR) applications. Background technique [0002] With the continuous improvement in performance and cost reduction of smart machines (such as robots), smart machines are now widely used in many fields. Representative tasks include crop surveillance, real estate photography, inspection of buildings and other structures, fire and security missions, border patrol and product delivery, among others. For obstacle detection and other functions, it is beneficial for smart machines to be equipped with obstacle detection and surrounding environment scanning devices. Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR, also known as "light radar") provides reliable and precise detection. However, in order to obtain an accurate model of the external environment, LIDAR systems require high-quality data sign...
