Problems solved by technology

While the method of Jud et al. allows to predict the probability of image elements being within the pulp region, the authors point out that the high variability between teeth in the shape of the pulp region is not relevant to building a statistical pulp shape model and integrating this model with pulp objects. Probability registration contradicts
Therefore, the method of Jud et al. cannot be used to segment the pulp region of teeth

Abstract

Methods, systems, and computer programs are disclosed for segmenting, from an image, a tooth's pulp region comprising a pulp chamber and root canals. Curvature- based shape recognition is performed (100) at different spatial scales using smoothed versions of the image. An indication of a point or region is received (200), located in the pulp chamber and referred to as 'seed'. The seed is used (300) as initial segmentation mask. An update procedure (410), iteratively carried out (400), comprises: (i) determining (411 ) candidate image elements for updating the segmentation mask, comprising: (i-1) in the first n iteration(s), a grayscale thresholding taking as reference the current segmentation mask; and, (i-2) in at least one iteration, taking the curvature-based shape recognition into account; (ii) retaining (412), among the candidate image elements, a region of connected candidate image elements that comprises the seed; and (iii) using (413) the retained region to update the segmentation mask.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method for segmenting the pulp region of a tooth from a two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) image of said tooth. The invention also relates to systems for carrying out such methods, and computer programs for carrying out such methods. Some embodiments of the invention may be used, for example, in planning endodontic treatment. Background technique [0002] Teeth have soft inner cores that contain nerves and relatively small blood vessels. This core is called the pulp region (dental pulp region) and extends from the crown to the tip of the root in the jawbone. When a tooth is cracked or has a deep cavity, bacteria can enter the pulp and cause a serious infection. If left untreated, such root canal infections can lead to pulp death, loss of the jaw bone, and loss of the tooth itself (see reference [1]; a list of references is provided at the end of this specification). These infections are treated by clea...
