Embodiment Construction

[0018] figure 1 A wireless communication network 100 according to an embodiment of the disclosure is shown. Network 100 includes a first access point 110 , a target wireless device 112 , an interfering wireless device 114 , and a second access point 116 . Access points 110, 116 and wireless devices 112, 114 transmit to each other using a radio access technology that requires performing a carrier sensing assessment (eg, CCA) prior to each transmission. For example, a radio access technology may utilize a license-exempt spectrum that is shared between multiple radio access technologies. In one embodiment, network 100 implements one or more IEEE 802.11 standards (referred to as "Wi-Fi") and includes a wireless local area network (WLAN). For convenience, terminology used herein may correspond to terminology used in the 802.11 standard (eg, "access point," "STA"). However, the concepts described herein may find use in other radio access technologies as well.

Abstract

Methods, apparatus and device-readable mediums are disclosed relating to wireless access in a network requiring a carrier-sense mechanism. One aspect provides a method performed by a transmitting device for transmitting to a receiving device in a wireless communications network. The transmitting device comprises a plurality of antenna elements. The method comprises: performing a directional carrier-sense assessment for one or more sub-bands configured for transmissions between the transmitting device and the receiving device, the directional carrier-sense assessment utilizing beamforming to detect a respective level of wireless activity on each of the sub-15 bands in a particular direction for transmissions to the receiving device; selecting a respective transmit power for each sub-band based on the determined level of wireless activity; and transmitting to the receiving device in the particular direction, using the respective selected transmit power for each sub-band.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to wireless communication networks, and in particular, to methods, apparatuses and apparatus readable media related to wireless access in wireless networks requiring carrier-sense mechanisms. Background technique [0002] Certain wireless communication networks require carrier sensing mechanisms to avoid or reduce interference between wireless devices utilizing similar spectrum. This is especially the case for radio access technologies such as Wi-Fi that use unlicensed spectrum. Carrier sensing mechanisms typically involve the transmitting device sensing the wireless medium for a period of time before transmitting over the medium. If the medium is determined to be busy (eg, another device is transmitting near the transmitting device), the transmission can be postponed; if the medium is determined to be idle, the transmission can occur. [0003] The carrier sensing mechanism in 802.11 Wi-Fi is called 1-pers...
