The engine can be started via the BISG and starter when the BISG alone may have difficulty starting the engine; however, if the battery voltage indicates that the battery does not have the capacity to start the engine via the BISG and starter, the BISG torque can be reduced to increase the torque produced by the starter priority. engine can be figure 1 type shown. engine and BISG can be included in as figure 2 in the drive train of the vehicle shown. Abstract

The invention provides a method and a system for engine starting. Systems and methods for operating a powertrain or driveline including an engine and a belt-driven starter generator are described. In one example, the belt-driven starter generator is used to start the engine unless vehicle operating conditions indicate that the belt-driven starter generator may be difficult to start the engine.
