Abstract

Embodiments of the invention relate to detecting seismic disturbances using optical fibers. In an example embodiment, a WDM optical transmitter of a network node operates to transmit a CW optical signal and an optical signal carrying original data. At another network node, a low complexity, low latency coherent optical receiver is used to obtain a time resolved measurement of a Stokes parameter of the CW optical signal. A signal processing chain of the optical receiver employs digital filtering to select frequency components in a flow of measurements corresponding to seismic disturbances of the fiber optic cable connecting the node. A value of the seismic indicator is then calculated using the selected frequency component and reported to a network controller. Based on such reports from three or more nodes, the network controller may determine the epicenter and magnitude of the earthquake, and may generate a tsunami forecast if necessary.

Description

technical field [0001] Various example embodiments relate to seismometry, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to detecting seismic disturbances using terrestrial and / or seafloor optical fibers. Background technique [0002] The introduction in this section may assist in a better understanding of aspects of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the statements in this section should be read as such and should not be construed as admissions as to what is and is not prior art. [0003] The scarcity of seismic instruments in the ocean limits seismic detection capabilities. For example, most seismic stations are located on land, with only a few seismographs on the ocean floor. As a result, many underwater earthquakes remain undetected, for example, because land-based seismic stations are often too far from the earthquake's epicenter. Also, most tsunami detection equipment is onshore, which may not be optimal in generating adequate tsunami warnings for affected coastal co...
