Embodiment Construction

[0029]The inventors have discovered that there are several challenges in providing continuous respiratory support to patients, particularly when intubated patients must be transferred between ventilators. One major issue is continuous maintenance of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP), another is infection avoidance as described above. Furthermore, the inventors have recognized that optimal patient monitoring can be provided when a consistent and continuous ventilation connection is maintained, including a constant connection to the ventilator via a patient connection device, and utilizing consistent ventilation parameters without interruption continuity.

[0030] Maintenance of PEEP is an important aspect of continuous mechanical ventilation, especially when patients are receiving lung volume recruitment therapy. Certain medical conditions, including but not limited to atelectasis, can cause collapsed alveoli. Collapsed alveoli may cause significant lung volume loss and...

Abstract

The invention provides a respirator system and method. A portable respirator includes a ventilation drive configured to drive ventilation gas from a gas source to a patient, where the portable respirator is configured to be removably connected to a host such that when the portable respirator is connected to the host, the ventilation drive drives the ventilation gas from the gas source to the patient. The ventilation driver drives ventilation gas from a host gas source to the patient when the portable ventilator is connected to the host, and drives ventilation gas from a portable gas source to the patient when the portable ventilator is not connected to the host.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure relates to the field of patient ventilation, including mechanical ventilation, and more particularly to portable ventilation drives and adaptive ventilation systems to facilitate patient ventilation in a number of different settings requiring mechanical ventilation or other respiratory support ventilation. [0002] During the course of medical treatment, patients may require some form of respiratory support provided by a ventilator, or may require multiple different types of respiratory support, often provided by different types of ventilation equipment in different settings . Breathing support may include assisted breathing, where the ventilator detects breathing attempts and provides supplemental pressure and gas flow to the patient for a complete and efficient breathing cycle. Other forms of respiratory support include mechanical ventilation, whereby the ventilator also initiates the breathing phase of each breathing cycl...
