Problems solved by technology

One disadvantage is the lack of aesthetic variation in ceiling systems since most acoustic panels have roughly the same appearance. Another disadvantage is that these panels are both rigid and brittle and can easily crumble. Also, due to the rigidity, such panels are difficult to insert into the openings provided for them, since the support rods must protrude partly into the openings in order to provide a support surface for the panels

Embodiment Construction

[0097] The suspended ceiling system 100 according to the present invention employs the suspension of generally elongated cross support members 102 forming bays forming generally rectangular openings in which panels according to the present invention may be placed. The above-mentioned support members generally consist of horizontally arranged elongated longitudinal members 102a arranged parallel to one direction in a conventional manner, usually at a vertical distance of 4 to 6 inches from the underlying members of the building structure on which the ceiling system is installed. Span the ceiling structure and hang from it. A plurality of horizontally oriented transverse support members 102b extend in parallel in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal members, resulting in a rectangular opening. The above-mentioned transverse members are also suspended at the same height as the longitudinal members. Both the longitudinal and transverse members have a novel T-shaped cross...

Abstract

A panel (108) for use in a drop ceiling system (100), or with appropriate modification, a wall, wherein the ceiling system (100) includes stringers (102a) and cross-members (102b) defining areas therebetween for support of the panels (108) wherein the panels (108) include at least one planar sheet (110) of material secured to a reinforcement member (114) having channels formed therein to extend in at least one direction relative to the sheet material (110). When more than one sheet (110, 112) of material is used, the sheets (110, 112) of material are disposed on opposite sides of the reinforcement member (114). The panels (108) are flexible for easy insertion into the openings between the stringers (102a) and cross-members (102b) of the support system and are readily compressed into a thinner profile for shipping purposes.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 60 / 148834, filed August 12,1999. This application is hereby incorporated by reference as if fully disclosed herein. technical field [0002] This invention relates to coverings for ceilings and walls in building structures and, more particularly, to suspended ceiling or wall panels in which each panel is supported on brackets of support members. Background technique [0003] Ceilings for architectural structures can take a variety of forms. The ceiling may be left unfinished so that the rafters or beams of the building structure are themselves exposed, or the rafters and beams may be finished with drywall, timber strapping, mortar or other similar materials. The walls of building structures can also be decorated in the same way. [0004] Another popular ceiling system is the common drop ceiling, where a number of support rods are suspended from the unfinished ceiling so as to form a shelf with a numb...
