Problems solved by technology

The second disadvantage is that the control cannot estimate the speed of the motor when the DC injection occurs; so if, while the motor is spinning, a sudden return to positive torque is required, the adjustable frequency AC voltage can be applied again during acceleration to Before the motor is terminated, a delay is required to re-determine the speed of the motor

Embodiment Construction

[0029] As shown in Figures 1 and 2, although the invention has been described as being applicable to a particular drive arrangement; it should be understood that the apparatus and method of the present invention can be used in other AC drive configurations. The drive shown in Figures 1 and 2 is of the non-regenerative type and therefore has certain advantages to utilize the present invention. Clearly, the invention can be used in other arrangements and configurations.

[0030] FIG. 1 shows a modular AC drive with an input transformer 2 . The primary winding 1 excites several secondary windings 3-11. The output of each secondary winding feeds a separate battery 12-20. These batteries are connected in series on each leg which in turn feeds into a three-phase AC induction motor 21 . The central control system 22 sends command signals to the local control 23 of each battery through the optical fiber optic path. This wiring diagram appears to be similar to that shown in patent ...

Abstract

An apparatus and control method for generating a braking torque opposite to the rotation of an electric motor. A converter provides AC power at multiple frequencies to the motor. The first frequency provided is at normal operating frequency / speed. A second frequency different from the normal operating frequency is provided to generate braking torque. The intensity of the braking can be controlled such that substantially some or all of the braking energy in the device or motor is dissipated. Multiple braking frequencies can be used. In addition, the relationship between the normal frequency and the braking frequency is maintained to limit the pulsation of the motor.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the braking of electric motors and their associated loads in alternating current motor drives. At least in part control of AC motors, motor drives are controlled with adjustable frequency. It is especially suitable for non-regenerative drives. Background technique [0002] A variable frequency drive is often used to vary the speed of the AC induction motor. The operation of this drive can obtain a fixed frequency AC power from the power supply bureau, and generate variable frequency output power to the motor. This drive can provide adjustable speed control using power semiconductor controlled ON or OFF switches. Many of these drives can only supply power into the motor. Therefore, they cannot provide regenerative braking. In non-regenerative drives, many drives utilize two-stage power conversion. The first stage converts the AC input power to intermediate DC power. The second stage uses a semiconductor switch as ...
