Embodiment Construction

[0021] see figure 1 , shows a preferred laser joining system 20 for joining assemblies of components, or in one embodiment, thermoplastic protrusions 22 for deforming workpieces. It should be understood that although system 20 is described for application to protrusions 22, the present invention can readily be applied to any non-riveting process of assembly of thermoplastic components.

[0022] Therefore, the measurements of protrusion deformation and protrusion collapse described below in riveting systems should be understood to apply equally throughout the transfer welding process of a first part transparent to laser radiation to a second thermoplastic part that absorbs the radiation Displacement or collapse that occurs in the Connection system 20 includes laser system 40 , excitation system 60 and controller 80 . The laser system 40 produces a predetermined amount of laser radiation based on the radiation control signal. For purposes of the present invention, laser irrad...

Abstract

The invention discloses a laser connection system, which deforms the protrusion of the workpiece based on the collapse of the protrusion of the workpiece to a predetermined displacement. The laser joining system has a laser system for generating a predetermined amount of laser irradiation based on an irradiation control signal. The actuation system directs the amount of laser radiation to the part based on the force control signal and contacts the part with the laser head. The actuation system also generates position feedback based on the position of the laser head, wherein the position feedback includes a reference position of the laser head. The laser connection system also includes a controller in communication with the laser system and the excitation system. The controller generates an illumination control signal and a force control signal based on the position feedback. One of the irradiation control signals causes the laser system to stop producing laser irradiation when the protrusion collapses a predetermined displacement relative to the reference position. Based on the collapse distance, laser exposure is controlled to allow for improved consistency and reduced tooling costs.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to laser staking and laser welding. More specifically, the present invention relates to stopping laser irradiation applied to a thermoplastic protrusion when the thermoplastic protrusion collapses to a predetermined displacement from a reference position. Background technique [0002] In many industrial fields, part of the fastening or riveting process requires the deformation and shaping of thermoplastic protrusions of the workpiece. For example in the automotive industry it is commonly used to rivet emblems to the center of steering wheels sold. Early methods of performing this type of riveting work included the use of ultrasound and hot air, but ultrasound typically marks the part and hot air tends to cause damage due to excessive jetting of hot air. [0003] Due to the above-mentioned limitations related to ultrasound and hot air, laser riveting is carried out in many industrial sectors. In the prior art l...
