Embodiment Construction

[0028] The present invention is directed to force feedback mechanisms and position sensing devices for user manipulable objects in point-point devices such as joysticks. The force feedback mechanism employs a double-sided or fork-shaped gimbal arm that adequately grips the joystick handle in all motions, including applying torque about the handle axis and up, down, and fore and aft forces. The improved constraints provide greater accuracy by reducing tolerances, thereby making the game more interesting. The force feedback mechanism further includes a gear reduction system employing a ring gear section that enables greater gear reduction. The gear reduction system takes up less space and makes the pointing device more compact. The position sensing device employs a sensor that is directly or substantially directly affixed to a joystick shaft or other user-manipulable object in order to reduce backlash and eliminate off-axis loads on the sensor.

Abstract

A pointing device includes a force feedback mechanism driven by an actuator to impart physical sensations to a user. The force feedback mechanism employs a gimbal with a pair of gimbal arms. One arm is a double-sided or forked arm that fully grips the joystick handle during all motions. Improved constraints provide greater precision as tolerances are reduced, making games more interesting. The force feedback mechanism further includes a gear reduction system. The structural design of the gear reduction system makes it take up less space. The pointing device is compact, has high precision, and has low production cost.

Description

[0001] This application is US Patent Application Serial No. 09 / 273,894, filed March 22, 1999 and US Patent Application Serial No. ___, filed February 18, 2000, entitled "FOLDING GEAR DRIVE WITH DIRECT DRIVE SENSOR Force Feedback Mechanism" (Attorney No. 009623-022100), the entire disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference. Technical field: [0002] The present invention relates generally to pointing devices, and more particularly to pointing devices having a force feedback mechanism including a gimbal that improves engagement with user-operable objects for increased accuracy and improved game play shelf. Background technique: [0003] One type of pointing device has force feedback properties. Such devices are commonly used in interactive systems that typically display a visual environment to the user on a display screen. The user can interact with the display environment for game play by employing a user-operable object or user interface device such as joyst...
