Embodiment Construction

[0044] The description is directed in particular to elements forming part of, or more directly cooperating with, the device according to the invention. It will be appreciated that elements not specifically shown or described may take various forms well known to those skilled in the art.

[0045] A feature of the invention is the use of one or more electromechanical grating devices to modulate light having four or more substantially monochromatic corner colors to provide a display device with an extended color gamut.

[0046] For the description below, components specific to an individual color path may be more specifically indicated by a letter attached to the part number. Where used, the letters correspond to the color paths; for example, "r" is to which red is attached, "b" is to blue, "g" is to green, "y" is to yellow, "yg" is for chartreuse, and "bg" for blue-green.

[0047] The term "vertex color" as used in this patent application refers to the component colors emitted...

Abstract

An improved imaging apparatus having an expanded color gamut defined by more than three vertex colors for forming a color image on a display surface, that includes: a light source including at least one dichroic combiner for transmitting a first vertex color and reflecting a second vertex color toward a color combining element that directs, along an illumination axis, a colored illumination beam having, at any one time, any one of at least four different vertex colors; a linear array of electromechanical grating devices for receiving the colored illumination beam along the illumination axis; an obstructing element for blocking a zeroth order light beam reflected from the linear array of electromechanical grating devices from reaching the display surface; a projection lens cooperating with a scanning element, and a logic control processor.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to display systems for forming two-dimensional images, and more particularly to color display apparatus and methods for producing images having a widened color gamut using electromechanical grating devices. Background technique [0002] With the advent of digital technology and the demonstration of all-digital projection systems, there has been great interest in increasing the range, or gamut, of colors that can be displayed, in order to provide a wider range of colors than is possible due to the gamut limitations of film dyes or phosphors. Images are more realistic and more vivid images. The familiar tristimulus CIE color model developed by the International Commission on Irradiation represents the color space perceived by a standard observer. Figure 1a Displays the CIE color model, which represents the visible gamut of 200 as the familiar "horseshoe" curve. Within the visible color gamut 200, the color gamut ...
