Abstract

The invention relates to a data carrier (1), more particularly, a chip card, such as the one used for an electronic purse. Said data carrier can also have a display (3) to show the credit balance remaining in the electronic purse. A battery (5) is provided to operate the display. When the display (3) is operated incorrectly, the battery (5) is rapidly discharged, thereby reducing the overall service life of the data carrier. According to the present invention, discharge of the battery due to incorrect operation is prevented by a device (6) for determining usability or probability of utilization of the display (3). If the device (6) determines that the display (3) cannot be used or that there is little probability for the display (3) to be used, the device (6) then deactivates the display.
