Methods and systems whereby two electronic wallets communicate and exchange information. In one such system, a consumer's personal electronic wallet communicates with the exclusive or preferred wallet of a web merchant. In one such system, an internet consumer registers with a web merchant's exclusive or preferred electronic wallet (“merchant wallet”) and provides consumer information (e.g., credit card number, mailing address, and other information) to the merchant wallet, which is stored by the merchant wallet in a database on the merchant server. Such information may be automatically populated by the consumer's personal electronic wallet. The consumer maintains current consumer information in a consumer electronic wallet on the consumer's personal computer. When the consumer visits the merchant site again, and orders goods or services, the merchant's preferred wallet can be automatically updated by the consumer's electronic wallet if any of the data in the merchant's wallet has changed. For example, the consumer wallet examines the information in the merchant wallet to determine if the information in the merchant wallet conforms to the current information in the consumer wallet. If the information does not conform, the consumer wallet communicates the current consumer information to the merchant wallet.

An electronic wallet which is biometrically secured stores credit card and other information. A biometric sensor prevents the electronic wallet from being used by the user who does not have permission to use the wallet. A rewriteable card is inserted into a slot of the wallet in order to have credit card information placed on the card. After the card is used the information is erased from the card when it is placed back in the slot in the electronic wallet.

The following procedures describe the use of cellular telephones and other analog or digital wireless communication devices to conduct transactions and activities. These procedures effectively allow such devices to function as an electronic wallet, a wireless PIN Pad, and a contactless Smart Card.

A wireless phone electronic wallet transaction is associated with a current location of the wireless device at the time of the transaction. The current location is compared to an entry in a database of associated merchants accepting electronic wallet transactions to the locations that they handle such transactions. If a match in location is found, the wireless phone electronic wallet transaction may be validated. If the wireless phone conducting the electronic wallet transaction is not at an expected or acceptable location at the time of the transaction, then the transaction may be flagged for possible fraudulent activity. An electronic purse card value system (10) includes terminal devices (12). Each terminal device includes a processor (26) which is in operative connection with a memory (28) and a modem (36). The terminal devices operate in response to configuration data which is stored in the terminal memory. Techniques for portable devices functioning as an electronic purse (e-purse) are disclosed. According to one aspect of the invention, a mechanism is provided to enable a portable device to conduct transactions over an open network with a payment server without compromising security. In one embodiment, a device is loaded with an e-purse manager. The e-purse manager is configured to manage various transactions and functions as a mechanism to access an emulator therein. The transactions may be conducted over a wired network or a wireless network. A three-tier security model is contemplated to support the security of the transactions from the e-purse. The three-tier security model includes a physical security, an e-purse security and a card manager security, concentrically encapsulating one with another. Security keys (either symmetric or asymmetric) are personalized within the three-tier security model.

The present invention provides an electronic wallet device for a mobile phone comprising a SIM card interface, comprising: a processing unit configured to provide a top-up service interface to the mobile phone and to receive and convert a first transaction instruction from the mobile phone into a top-up instruction; an authentication unit provided with an electronic wallet and configured to receive and convert the top-up instruction into an authorized top-up instruction and to write an amount to the electronic wallet according to the authorized top-up instruction; and an NFC antenna electrically connected to the authentication unit.
