Problems solved by technology

[0005] A problem associated with the combination of voice, packet data, and circuit data services running simultaneously is the ability to maintain high data rate connections with the required constant error rate over channels of varying quality
Also, maximizing system capacity when high data rate channels are available is also a problem

Embodiment Construction

[0018] figure 1 A communication system 100 is shown in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. System 100 includes a mobile station 102 , a first base transceiver station 104 , a second base transceiver station 103 , and a centralized base station controller (CBSC) 105 . The CBSC 105 includes a transcoder 106 , and a selection distribution unit 111 . System 100 preferably includes a plurality of mobile stations and base transceiver stations, but for simplicity, figure 1 Only one mobile station and two base transceiver stations are shown in . In the preferred embodiment, system 100 is a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system. System 100 may also be any communication system that sends signaling messages and requires accurate delivery and receipt by mobile stations.

[0019] The first base station 104 includes a transceiver 108 that includes a transmitter and a receiver. The second base station 103 comprises a transceiver 107 comprising a transm...

Abstract

A method and system for retransmitting data packets in a communication system having a variable data rate is disclosed. In the preferred embodiment, data is packetized into atomic packet sizes equal to the lowest rate packet size. If a data packet needs to be retransmitted at a different rate than the rate at which the data packet was originally sent, the rate is dynamically changed based on a multiple of the atomic packet size.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to communication systems, and in particular to an improved method and system for retransmitting data packets in a communication system with variable data rates. Background of the invention [0002] Standards bodies such as the International Standards Organization (ISO) have adopted a layered approach for reference models of communication subsystems. The entire communication subsystem is decomposed into layers, each layer performing a well-defined function within the scope of the entire communication subsystem. It operates according to a defined protocol by exchanging messages (user data and additional control information) with a corresponding peer layer in a remote system. Each layer has a well-defined interface between itself and the layers above and below it. Therefore, the implementation of a particular protocol layer is independent of all other layers. The functionality of each layer is formalized as a protocol t...
