Embodiment 1
[0037] The preparation procedure for various simulated coating formulations (used in Examples 2-4) is described below. For the experiment of Example 2, about 0.3 grams of 3-isothiazolone microbicide (Skane TM M-8 antifungal agent) (45-47% 2-n-octyl-3-isothiazolone (OIT), 48-50% propylene glycol, 3-5% water) is added to the film-forming polymer emulsion containing about 70 grams and 0.2-0.3 grams of pH adjuster amine compound in the simulated paint formulation. For Examples 3 and 4, about 0.2 grams of 3-isothiazolone microbicide (Skane TM M-8 antifungal agent) (45-47% 2-n-octyl-3-isothiazolone (OIT), 48-50% propylene glycol, 3-5% water) is added to the film-forming polymer emulsion containing about 50 grams , 0.1-0.3 gram of pH regulator amine compound, 0.0-0.11 gram of zinc octanoate (18% aqueous solution) and 0.0-0.017 gram of copper nitrate (such as Cu(NO 3 ) 2 1.5H 2 O or 23% aqueous solution) in the simulated paint formulation. The formulated samples were then plac...
Embodiment 2
[0039] Table 1 summarizes the effect of pH on OIT stability in simulated paint formulations containing no copper or zinc ions (no zinc octoate or copper salt in all samples). The pH of all samples was adjusted with 10% HCl or 10% NaOH to lower or raise the pH of the samples, respectively. The pH of samples 2-A-1 and 2-B-1 dropped to 9.6 after three days. At pH values below 9.5, all formulations were stable with respect to OIT content, (>90% retention after about 2 months); at pH values above 9.5, OIT was stable during the first few days Sexuality declines rapidly (<75% retention after three days).

Embodiment 3
[0043] Table 3 summarizes the effect of zinc ions (such as zinc octoate) or copper ions (such as copper nitrate) on the stability of OIT in simulated paint formulations at high pH (9.8-9.9). All samples were adjusted to the desired final pH with 10% NaOH. Containing only zinc ions (Zn 2+ = 400ppm) in the formulation, the stability of OIT decreased rapidly in the first few days (retention 2+ = 50 ppm) was added to this formulation, the OIT stability was greatly improved (>90% retention after two months), even at very high pH.
