Problems solved by technology

This can be used in multiple locations, but would be costly with a more expensive directional high frequency sensor
Other methods using various combinations of emitters and sensors add to the cost of the file delivery system because both emitters and sensors are expensive

Embodiment Construction

[0015] The invention will be directed in particular to elements forming part of, or more directly associated with, a device according to the invention. It is to be understood that elements not specifically shown or described herein may take various forms well known to those skilled in the art.

[0016] now refer to figure 1 , the figure shows a device for detecting multiple documents 10 according to an embodiment of the present invention. In this particular embodiment, the device includes an ultrasonic drive circuit 11 which provides a drive signal to a transmitter 15 as determined by a microprocessor 21 . The ultrasonic transmitter generates an ultrasonic signal 30 which passes through the document feed area 40 . One or more files 42 may be delivered through the file feed area 40 . The transmitted ultrasonic signal 30 is reflected by the reflector 52 . The reflected ultrasonic signal passes through the document feed channel 40 and any documents 42 in the feed channel. Ul...

Abstract

An apparatus for detection of multiple documents (10) in a document transport system comprises a transmitter (15), located on a first side of a document feed path (40), and emits a signal through the document feed path. A reflector (52), located on a second side of said document feed path, reflects the signal through the document feed path. A first sensor (14) detects the signal from the transmitter. A second sensor detects the signal from the transmitter.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to the detection of multiple document feeds or small documents overlapping larger documents using multiple detectors. Background technique [0002] Scanners and copiers use document feeders to transfer documents into the machine. Mechanisms used to transport documents, including sheets of paper or other material, may accidentally pick up more than one document fed from a stack of documents. Need to determine when more than one file is being pulled into the file transfer, as multiple files may clog the transfer or prevent some files from being processed. In many cases, the documents fed into the scanner are of different sizes. Some smaller documents may be on the side of the document feed path without passing under the single position sensor. [0003] There are generally two methods for multiple document detection, the contact method and the non-contact method. The contact method involves measuring small thick...
