Embodiment Construction

[0024] Before embodiments of the invention are explained in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and the arrangement of parts set forth in the following discussion or in the accompanying drawings. The invention is capable of other embodiments and of being carried out in various ways. Also, it should be understood that the phraseology and terminology used herein are for the purpose of discussion and should not be regarded as limiting.

[0025] FIG. 1 illustrates an exemplary functional block diagram of a group communication system 100 . The group communication system 100 is also known as a push-to-talk system, a network broadcast service (NBS), a dispatch system, or a point-to-multipoint communication system. In NBS 100, users of a group of communication devices, each referred to as a net member, communicate with each other using the communication devices assigned to each net member. The term "net" ...

Abstract

A method and apparatus for reducing latency in a group communication network (100), capable of significantly reducing the actual total sleep wake-up time and PTT latency due to exchanging group call signaling, even is when the mobile station (102, 104, 106) is dormant and no traffic channels are active. The method and apparatus provide for exchanging call signaling through Short Data Burst (SDB) message signaling. The method and apparatus provide advantageously parallel re-establishment of dedicated traffic channels for both a talker mobile station and a dormant listener mobile station.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60,291,454, filed May 15, 2001, which application is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a point-to-multipoint communication system. More specifically, the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for reducing sleep-wake latency for users of push-to-talk communication devices in a group communication network. technical background [0004] A wireless service that attempts to communicate quickly, efficiently, one-to-one or one-to-many (group) has existed in many forms over the years. Generally, these services have been half-duplex, in which case the user presses a "push-to-talk" button (PTT) on his phone / radio to initiate a voice call. In some implementations, or in advanced systems, the push of a button on any key of the radio may communicate through som...
