Problems solved by technology

For example, if the stripping pry is done too quickly or too slowly, the stripping process may cause edge defects or other damage to the lens
[0009] Therefore, there is an unmet need for a more efficient and safer process for separating lens mold parts

Embodiment Construction

[0029] The present invention provides methods and apparatus suitable for separating two mold halves from each other after polymerizing lens-forming monomers within the two mold halves. According to the present invention, the separation of the two mold parts is carefully controlled so that the separation rate is increased during certain stages of the separation operation. This increased separation rate results in less damage to the lens due to the mold separation process.

[0030] now refer to figure 1 , shows a block diagram of a lens 100, such as a contact lens, and mold parts 101-102 used to form the lens 100 (prior art). figure 1Mold parts 101-102 are shown in position during mold separation. In some exemplary embodiments, these mold parts include a back mold part 101 and a front mold part 102 . As used herein, the term "frontal mold part" refers to a mold part whose concave surface 110 is used to form the front side of a lens. Similarly, the term "back mold part" refer...

Abstract

The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for separating lens mold parts at multiple rates. In particular, the present invention discloses methods and apparatus for removing molded soft contact lenses, high precision intraocular lenses, and the like from the individual molds from which these lenses are manufactured. The present invention teaches multiple rate control of the crowbar to maximize lens production efficiency and mitigate lens damage due to die part separation.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to the manufacture of ophthalmic lenses and, in particular, to methods and apparatus for removing molded soft contact lenses, high precision intraocular lenses, and the like from the individual molds used to manufacture these lenses. The present invention teaches multiple rate control of pry fingers to maximize lens production efficiency and reduce lens damage due to mold part separation. Background technique [0002] In view of the rapid growth of the ophthalmic contact lens industry, it has been desirable, even necessary, to be able to supply contact lenses that can be replaced regularly and frequently to minimize the possibility of contamination by the user. Thus, this creates an opportunity for manufacturers to strive to provide automated methods and apparatus that can automatically manufacture high quality lenses in a cost-effective and efficient manner. [0003] In the art of manufacturing lenses such as hydrogel...
