Rapid exchange iol insertion apparatus and methods of using

A system for easily transferring an intraocular lens (IOL) from a lens case to an inserter, and then into a patient's eye. The lens case has a transfer mechanism therein which retains the IOL until engagement with the inserter. The transfer mechanism may include jaws having a closed configuration for retaining the IOL and an open configuration for releasing the IOL. Engagement of the inserter with the lens case automatically opens the jaws and transfers the IOL to the inserter. The IOL is transferred into a load chamber of a nosepiece rotatably coupled to a handpiece. After transfer of the IOL, the nosepiece is rotated from a load position to a delivery position. The IOL may have an optic and a haptic coupled to the optic, and the lens case may be capable of configuring the haptic as desired to facilitate its transfer into an inserter and / or into the eye. For instance, the lens case may fold one or both of the haptics over the optic. Preferably, the lens case maintains the haptic in this position during transfer of the intraocular lens into an inserter and / or inserter cartridge. A manifold for easily distributing a viscoelastic medium to the load chamber of the inserter is also provided.

An intraocular lens for use in extracapsular cataract extraction has a haptic pat that surrounds the optical pat of the lens and further contains a groove of such shape to accommodate the anterior and posterior capsules of the lens bag after anterior capsulorhexis, extracapsular cataract extraction and posterior capsulorhexis. This new approach is believed to prevent the appearance of secondary opacification of the capsules, allows a very stable fixation of the intraocular lens and ensures a tight separation between the anterior and posterior segment of the eye. This invention describes an intraocular lens (IOL) design with a removable optic, which can be inserted in and removed from a haptic device. In this haptic the anterior and posterior capsules are sealed in order to have a perfect control over the lens epithelial cell proliferation which is thereby restricted to the peripheral part of the capsular bag. Additionally, a ring caliper is described as new surgical device to allow a precise sizing and centration of the anterior capsulorhexis. The removable optic allows repeatable correction of the eye focusing over time in case the optical parameters of the eye have changed due to a variety of factors. By separating the optic part from the haptic part, the optic part can easily be manufactured in any shape matching the optical errors of the eye, including the optical aberrations. The optic part can be manufactured out of any biomaterial restoring ocular accommodation. The optic part may include prismatic, astigmatic or magnification correction to improve visual performance. The optic part may consist of or include an electronic device for the purpose of artificial vision. In order to further assist the accommodative capabilities of the implant a capsular accommodation ring of specific biomechanical properties is inserted in the capsular equator.
