Embodiment Construction

[0016] now refer to figure 1 , a block diagram depicting the apparatus of the present invention. The device preferably comprises a transmitter 11, an antenna 12 for transmitting UWB pulses, an antenna 13 for receiving return signals, and signal processing means 14 for analyzing these return signals, data processing means for processing the signal data 15 and a display 16 for displaying these results. Pulses from antenna 12 detect object of interest 17 and these return signals are reflected onto antenna 13 .

[0017] In the prototype version of the system there is a transmitter 11 comprising a 2x2 solid state broadband antenna array 12 . Radiation pulses are emitted from the antenna array 12 with a rise time of about 100-500 picoseconds and a fall time of about 5-10 nanoseconds. The antenna array 12 generates an electric field in the vicinity of the transmitter 11 in the order of 5-7 kV / m. A dc (direct current) battery powers the transmitter 11. The reflected return signal...

Abstract

A method and system for detecting objects of interest in a target area using ultra-wideband (UWB) RF signals is disclosed. The transmitter and antenna array generate ultra-wideband RF pulsed signals that are used to detect target areas that may contain objects of interest. The antenna and signal processor receive return signals from the target area and process these return signals to produce a set of coordinates. The coordinates of the processed return signal are compared to the coordinates of known objects in a pre-existing database to determine if there is a match between the return signal and a known object. When there is an indication of a match, the presence of the known object is indicated to the operator of the system.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a device and method for detecting objects using time-domain pulse signals, and more particularly to a device and method for detecting visually occluded objects using ultra-wideband (UWB) RF signals. Background technique [0002] UWB technology has been around for decades, and it has been used in radar-based applications in the past. The development of high-speed switching technology makes UWB technology more attractive for low-cost user communication applications. Many companies are now working on R&D programs that are studying the extension of UWB technology to high-speed communications, and the FCC is setting emission limits that will allow UWB communications systems to be used on an unauthorized basis. [0003] A UWB radio is an RF communication device that uses high-bandwidth microwave pulses to transmit digital data with very low power density over a wide-band spectrum. These devices can transmit data at very hig...
