Embodiment Construction

[0045] The following description assumes an understanding of the fundamentals of piezoelectric materials, operation and modes, such as those described in "Piezoelectric Ceramics" by Jaffe, Cook and Jaffe, Academia Press, 1971, and references cited therein. Accordingly, the content of this publication is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Another useful reference describing the field of piezoelectric mechanics is "Piezoelectric Shells" by H.S. Tzou, Kluwer, Academic Publishers, MASS., 1993, which is also incorporated herein by reference.

[0046] Driver coupling (connection) to hitting face

[0047]There are several methods of coupling (attaching) the actuator and transducer to the bat face, the surface of interaction between the ball and the head. The transducers can be directly coupled (connected) to 1) the relative deformation of the striking face (elastic), 2) the absolute motion (inertial) using various techniques or 3) between the striking face or the club...

Abstract

A method and apparatus for actively controlling impact between an impact club head and a golf ball. A golf club head has a face with an actuator material or a mechanically coupled device to affect the movement of the face. The ball striking face actuation controls impact parameters, impact characteristics or derived ball parameters such as velocity, direction and spin angular rate derived from the situation between the ball striking face and the golf ball. In addition, the device has control means for determining the activation of the ball striking face. Several embodiments have been proposed for controlling parameters such as ball speed and direction. The present invention can take energy from a ball striking, convert it to electrical energy, and then reapply it in a controlled manner to affect an aspect of the ball striking surface, such as position, velocity, deformation, stiffness, vibration, motion, temperature or other physical parameters.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to the field of advanced sporting equipment design and, more particularly, to the design and operation of a golf club head system for controlling the impact between a club head and a golf ball. Background technique [0002] Cross References to Related Applications [0003] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 494,739, filed August 14, 2003, and US Patent Application Serial No. 10 / 915,804, filed August 9, 2004. [0004] The present invention relates to gains in accuracy and distance achieved in golf clubs (eg, drivers) by applying control and actuation techniques to club design. There have been many improvements over the years that have had a major impact on the accuracy and distance a golfer can achieve. These improvements have generally focused on the design of passive systems; they do not have the ability to change any physical parameter under active control during the swing, esp...
