Embodiments of the disclosure describe a method for managing User Equipment (UE) context release procedures. The method includes transmitting, by a source Next Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) node to a target NG-RAN node, a handover request message to initiate a handover event of a User Equipment (UE). The method includes determining, upon successful completion of the handover event, whether a UE context release message is received prior to a data collection update message from the target NG-RAN node. The method includes maintaining a UE context at the source NG-RAN node, in response to determining that the UE context release message receives prior to the data collection update message from the target NG-RAN node. The method includes releasing the UE context at the source NG-RAN node, in response to determining that the UE context release message receives subsequent to the data collection update message from the target NG-RAN node.
