Echo cancellation using cross-correlation of buffered receive and transmit sample segments to determine cancelling filter coefficients

PCT No. PCT / GB95 / 02618 Sec. 371 Date Jul. 2, 1997 Sec. 102(e) Date Jul. 2, 1997 PCT Filed Nov. 7, 1995 PCT Pub. No. WO96 / 15597 PCT Pub. Date May 23, 1996An echo detecting system includes data stores for storing signals from up and down channels respectively. The signals undergo pre-processing to identify signals forms characteristic of speech and instruct a measurement unit to carry out comparison using cross-correlation techniques between the signals stored in the stores only when such characteristics are detected. This reduces the processing power required and raises the accuracy of the correlations. Parallel processing techniques allow echoes with longer delay periods to be detected. The results of the measurement may be used to generate an echo-cancellation signal.

Modified backoff mechanism for wireless networks

In a scheme for accessing a wireless network, a backoff delay time period representing a duration of time that is to elapse before a station is permitted to attempt a retransmission is selected from a group of delay periods. The group of delay periods grows at a rate that is less than exponentially (e.g. linearly) based on the number of attempted retransmissions. Selection of the backoff delay time period may entail random selection of an integer N from a contention window and multiplication of N by a slot time duration. The contention window may be a range of integers [0, W-1]. The contention window size W may be initialized to a predetermined minimum value upon a first attempted transmission and may be capped at a predetermined maximum value. Average backoff delay may be reduced in comparison to a binary exponential backoff approach.

Techniques for improved user interface helping super guides

User interface approaches to providing help to players by playing back previously recorded inputs. Certain exemplary embodiments involve displaying, with the recorded playback, an input device icon to show where the inputs are occurring and / or where the inputs should occur if the player were to make them. Modifications are made to the previously recorded input to improve the user's ability to see what is happening, as well as making the playback seem more consistent, mechanical, and automatic. The help makes the computer application seem like the user interface is operating itself in a way that is easy to follow, rather than giving the impression that a previously recorded user input stream simply is being played back in accordance with the more organic and potentially idiosyncratic behaviors of the recorded person. The modifications may in certain exemplary embodiments include, for example, path smoothing / correction, automatic snapping, delay periods, speed normalization, etc.

Method of Manufacturing Calcium Sulfonate Greases Using Delayed Addition of Non-Aqueous Converting Agents

ActiveUS20160115416A1Quality improvementGreat thickener yieldThickenersAdditivesSulfonateDelay periods
A method of manufacturing an overbased calcium sulfonate grease comprising a reduced amount of overbased calcium sulfonate, water and at least one non-aqueous converting agent, where at least a portion of the non-aqueous converting agent is added after one or more delay periods relative to the addition of the water. A delay period may involve the period of time it takes to adjust the temperature of the mixture, a period of time during which the mixture is held at a temperature or within a range of temperatures, and multiples and any combination thereof. These calcium sulfonate greases have improved thickener yield and high dropping points compared to greases of substantially similar composition made without a delay between the additions of water and a non-aqueous converting agent, particularly when a poor quality overbased calcium sulfonate is used.

Interlaced delay-locked loolps for controlling memory-circuit timing

For control, some memory circuits use a delay-locked loop to generate a set of signals, each delayed a different amount relative a reference signal. However, as circuits get faster and faster, conventional delay-locked loops require use of extra interpolation circuitry to generate smaller delays, and thus consume considerable power and circuit space. Accordingly, the inventor devised a circuit which interlaces and synchronizes two delay-locked loops, each including a number of controllable delay elements linked in a chain. In one embodiment, the first loop produces a sequence of clock signals delayed an even number of delay periods relative a reference clock signal, and the second loop produces a sequence of clock signals delayed an odd number of delay periods relative the reference clock signal. In addition, the first and second loops are synchronized.

Method and system for operating a network server to discourage inappropriate use

A method and system for operating a network server to discourage inappropriate use are disclosed. A server is connected to a plurality of connected client devices, and is configured to transfer information between any selected one of the client devices and a memory for static storage of information. The method comprises the steps of receiving a request to transfer a file between the memory and one of the plurality of client devices, removing a packet comprising a defined number of information bits from the file, transferring the packet between the memory and the client device per the request, then pausing for a defined delay period, and repeating the removing, transferring, and pausing steps in order until all of the file has been transferred. Preferably, the method further comprises increasing the defined delay period after each execution of a packet transfer cycle, thereby discouraging the transfer of unacceptably large files. The delay period may be initiated, and the amount of increase or other adjustment to the delay period during the transfer cycle may be controlled, by selected a predetermined value from a table, or by calculating a value based on variable input parameters such as the file size, server load, network response time, and number of transfer requests from the client device within a defined prior period. The number of information bits in the packet may similarly be initiated, and adjusted during the transfer cycle. The system comprises the server having an application for performing the method according to the invention.

Methods and apparatus for reducing power consumption during network scanning operations with adverse battery conditions

In a mobile communication device, a scanning operation is performed with use of a wireless transceiver to identify one or more available wireless communication networks in a given coverage area. Each time the scanning operation fails to result in any connection between the mobile device and a wireless network, the scanning operation is repeated after delaying for a next delay period of a plurality of scanning delay periods n=[n1, n2, . . . , upper limit]. Initially, an upper limit of the plurality of scanning delay periods n=[n1, n2, . . . , upper limit] is established at a value of M. During operation, the mobile device monitors to identify whether a predetermined battery condition, such as a low battery capacity or high battery discharge rate, exists. If the predetermined battery condition exists, the upper limit of the plurality of scanning delay periods n=[n1, n2, . . . , upper limit] is reestablished at a value of N>M. If a more severe battery condition exists, the upper limit of the plurality of scanning delay periods n=[n1, n2, . . . , upper limit] is reestablished at a value of P>N>M. Advantageously, power consumption is reduced during adverse battery conditions of the mobile device.

Multiple access techniques for a wireless communiation medium

A multiple access technique for a wireless communication system establishes separate channels by defining different time intervals for different channels. In a transmitted reference system different delay periods may be defined between transmitted reference pulses and associated data pulses for different channels. In addition, a multiple access technique may employ a common reference pulse for multiple channels in a transmitted reference system. Another multiple access technique assigns different pulse repetition periods to different channels. One or more of these techniques may be employed in an ultra-wide band system.
