example 1

[0033]A three-dimensional damping device of the type shown in Figure 1 is constructed in the form of a cube, where each side is about 10 feet (3m) long. The circular cross-section of mild steel pipe used had a diameter of 12 inches (25.4 cm), and the steel pipe had a wall thickness of inches (0.635cm). The individual tubes have cutouts on the sides where they will be welded near this location. Lengths of used wood stakes are inserted into this pipe before the end caps are welded in place. The pipe extending vertically into the offshore installation has an opening in which a filling valve is installed, and said damping device is installed on said offshore installation. The same tube has a pressure relief drain plug to relieve hydraulic pressure at the intended valve.

example 2

[0035] An elongated three-dimensional sacrificial damping device of the type shown in Figure 3 consists of four tubes of annular cross-section, said tubes being 10 feet (3 m) long, 6 inches (15.24 cm) in diameter, and having a wall thickness of (0.318cm). (0.21 cm) thick thin-walled tubing is typically cut to 3 inch (7.62 cm) lengths to form the remaining elements, including diagonal struts that project out of the plane of the interior region defined by the side walls. The ends of the shorter connectors are cut to the contours of the longer longitudinal elements in preparation for welding. Said element 12c protrudes in substantially the same direction as the predicted maximum force vector of the accidental impact and is filled with chipped wood and wood of any length. They are then filled with rigid formaldehyde foam through the previously installed joints to provide additional resistance to the plasticity of the steel tube elements in the event of an impact. The purpose ...

Abstract

A sacrificial impact-absorbing and energy-dissipating structure for protecting marine facilities from the destructive force of an accidental impact by a marine vessel is constructed from a plurality of inexpensive steel pipes or tubular members that are permanently secured together as by welding to form an open three-dimensional rectilinear framework of plastically defoimable material in which the interior of some or all of the tubular members are in fluid communication. One or more of the tubular members forming the structure can be filled with water, -a rigid foam material and / or wooden elements that will provide additional energy-dissipation capabilities in the event that the containing tube is subjected to a deforming impact. Optionally, filler ports, discharge ports, pressure relief plugs, and valves can be provided on one or more of the tubular members.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to protective equipment secured to offshore installations such as docks, piers, offshore oil and gas drilling platforms and loading stations to absorb potentially damaging impact forces caused by large vessels. Background technique [0002] In the event of an unexpected loss of power or encountering a storm or other severe conditions, large offshore vessels such as cargo ships, crude oil tankers, supply ships and service vessels can cause considerable impact damage to offshore equipment. Various sacrificial shock absorbing devices have been proposed for these marine and offshore environments, for example US Pat. No. 4,398,848 discloses a marine barrier of open tubular structure supported by deformable shock absorbers. However, the open tubular frame structures described are made from metal tubes of various diameters, including those that are relatively small and have little impact energy dissipation capability. The frame ...
