The turbine blades 20 are made of any practical material, but nickel-based superalloys are preferred. The turbine blade 20 includes an airfoil portion 22 against which the flow of hot exhaust gas is directed. (The corresponding airfoil portion of a turbine bucket has a similar profile but generally includes a support structure at the other end of the airfoil). The turbine blades 20 are secured to a turbine disk (not shown) with a dovetail 24 extending downwardly from the airfoil 22 to engage a slot in the turbine disk. Abstract

An internal passage of an article such as a gas turbine airfoil is coated with an aluminum-containing coating. To accomplish this coating process, a coating slurry of a mixture of a carrier component of water and a hectorite clay or a bentonite clay, together with a solids component of a source of aluminum, an halide activator, and an oxide dispersant, is prepared. The coating slurry is applied to the internal passage of the gas turbine airfoil and dried. The gas turbine airfoil and the applied coating slurry are heated to form an aluminum-containing coating bonded to the internal passage of the gas turbine airfoil. Excess coating material is removed from the article internal passage.

field of invention [0001] This invention relates to methods of applying aluminum-containing coatings to surfaces, and more particularly to methods of applying such coatings to gas turbine airfoil interior surfaces from aluminum-containing slurries. Background of the invention [0002] In an aircraft's gas turbine (jet) engine, air is drawn in from the front of the engine and mixed with fuel, compressed by a shaft-mounted compressor. Combusting the mixture, the scorching exhaust flows through a turbine mounted on the same shaft. The flow of combustion gases strikes the turbine blades and the airfoil portion of the vane, turning the turbine and rotating the shaft that powers the compressor and fan. In the more complex types of gas turbine engines, the compressor and high-pressure turbine are mounted on one shaft, and the fan and low-pressure turbine are mounted on a separate shaft.
