Problems solved by technology

[0005] Unfortunately, the aforementioned coatings and other spacers have had only limited success
For example, some prior art separator materials are reabsorbed into the body too quickly, resulting in an undesirable local drop in pH, which causes or exacerbates problems such as local inflammation, discomfort, and / or foreign body antibody reactions
Other materials take too long to absorb, may not be ductile enough, or require complex chemical compositions and / or reactions that increase manufacturing costs

Abstract

An anti-adhesion film is provided on an implant introduced into a patient's surgical site in order to prevent adhesion between the implant and surrounding tissue after surgery. The implant may comprise biological material, such as a transplanted organ; or may comprise non-biological material, such as a medical device. The film can be applied in various ways. In one example, a membrane according to the invention is shrink-wrapped around a pacemaker. In another example, the breast implant is sprayed or dipped with a film material.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to medical devices, and more particularly to methods and devices for reducing postoperative adhesion between living tissue and implants introduced into a patient's surgical site. Background technique [0002] A major clinical problem associated with surgical procedures or inflammation may be unwanted tissue growth or adhesion, which may occur in the initial stages of the healing process following surgery or a disorder. Another problem is foreign body reactions in response to medical devices or implants introduced into the surgical site. Yet another problem is leakage, migration, or diffusion of substances, such as fluids, from the implant into the surrounding tissue. [0003] One approach to addressing the problem of adhesion is the use of bioresorbable barrier materials placed between the healing site and adjacent surrounding tissue after surgery in the form of gels, coatings, fabrics, foams, film etc. Exampl...
