The invention discloses a method and a system for generating business codes and solves the problem that the prior code generating method lacks of flexibility, cannot process variable code formats and therefore cannot satisfy different client demands. When a business module needs to use codes, a coding regulation conforming to the business demand is first searched out; then the regulation is resolved and a plurality of coding segments are obtained; the code of each segment is produced according the coding regulation of every segment; and finally the codes of all the segments are combined to form a complete business code, which is then returned to a called business module. The method can flexibly and automatically generate various codes meeting the business demands. Once being unable to satisfy the demand, the present regulation can be easily changed in definition to produce a new code. So the invention can adapt to variable coding formats and satisfy coding demands of different business applications of different users.
