Background technique [0002] A laryngeal mask airway device is a known device for establishing an airway in an unconscious patient. US Patent No. 4,509,514 is one of several publications illustrating a laryngeal mask airway device. Such devices have been used for many years and replace the previous, once known endotracheal tube. Endotracheal tubes comprising an elongated tube with an inflatable balloon disposed at the distal end of the tube have been used for at least nearly 70 years to establish an airway in unconscious patients. In operation, the distal end of the endotracheal tube is inserted through the patient's mouth, through the patient's trachea. Once so positioned, the balloon is inflated to form a seal with the inner lining of the trachea.
