[0053] image 3 A first embodiment of the method according to the invention is shown which comprises measuring as a first parameter the laser current of the laser light source 186 which is required to generate a defined optical power level P of the laser beam 188 as a second parameter. In this embodiment, measurement device 102 (see figure 1 ) measures the laser current of the laser light source 186 as a first parameter. Measuring device 104 (see figure 1 ) measures the optical power level P of the laser beam 188. Estimating means 106 (see figure 1 ) estimates the maximum effective write power of the optical storage drive 180 using the measured laser current required to produce the optical power level P of the laser beam 188 . image 3 represents the laser current I of the laser light source 186 op_measured relationship, the current is determined using the system 100 at the optical power level P of the laser beam 188 opt_measured measured at. Abstract

In summary, the present invention provides a method for estimating maximum available write power of an optical storage drive. Optical drives have a certain guaranteed maximum power corresponding to the largest emission angles and worst case electrical parameters of the laser, but many drives could produce more if needed because they are not worst case. The extra power that is available from the lasers that is not worst case is wasted. By identifying drives with lasers that have favorable parameters, the maximum available write power of a drive becomes larger. The present invention solves thisproblem by providing an estimation method wherein a beam of laser light is generated having a power level (P), a first parameter of the laser light source and a second parameter of the beam of laser light that is generated are measured and used to estimate the maximum available write power.
