Embodiment Construction

[0018] In the following description, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof, and in which are shown by way of illustrations specific embodiments in which the invention may be practiced. It is to be understood that other embodiments may be utilized and structural changes may be made without departing from the scope of the present invention. For example, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the terms field or frame or image used to describe various embodiments may be used interchangeably when referring to video data.

[0019] Least-squares classification temporal filters automatically adapt to irregular motion vector patterns, object features, and spatial textures when predicting target images. This least squares classification filter acts on the motion compensated signal in the time domain, unlike other methods which attempt to filter motion vectors directly (eg triangular filtering in the motion vector domain). For example, since thi...

Abstract

A method of performing a temporal prediction includes using an irregular filter tap to produce a prediction of a target image, and applying a regular filter tap to the prediction to produce an enhanced prediction.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of video compression. Background technique [0002] A temporal prediction filter is used in video compression to predict a target image from a set of previously decoded reference images. The temporal prediction process is effective at removing large amounts of temporal redundancy, which generally results in higher coding efficiency. The prediction process uses a set of motion vectors and filters that operate on the motion vectors to predict a target image. [0003] For example, the prediction method divides the reference image 110 into a plurality of blocks 120 of fixed size, as shown in FIG. 1 . Each block has an associated motion vector describing the block's motion relative to the target image. Motion vectors are shown by white dots in image 110 . Temporal prediction filters use the associated motion vectors to perform simple motion compensation techniques on each block in the reference image to predict...
