Problems solved by technology

[0007] The downside of the state of the art left / right encoding is that it requires a considerable amount of data to get the middle view and still may get unsatisfactory results
It is difficult to compute an exact matching disparity field, which will lead to artifacts in the interpolation, such as background parts sticking to foreground objects

Embodiment Construction

[0028] FIG. 1 shows a first camera 101 capturing a first image of a scene comprising a near object 110 and a distant object 112 . Its field of view is defined by lines 103 and 104 . Its background view is occluded by close objects, ie the area 132 to the left of the tangent 120 is invisible. However, the second camera 102 is able to capture a portion of this area 132 in a second image which, for reasons of brevity, may be considered to be, and referred to as, the right image (but this should not be construed narrowly as its was taken a little further to the right in another frame). The second camera is also able to photograph other parts 130 of the close object 110 .

[0029] attached figure 2 A symbolic representation of what these captured images would look like as a set of pixels. The image signal 200 may eg be of a predetermined encoding format JPEG and contain an encoded photograph of a scene, or may be an MPEG-4 encoded film shot. In the latter case, the 3D data 210...

Abstract

A new method of encoding multiple view image information into an image signal (200) is described, comprising: adding to the image signal (200) a first image (220) of pixel values representing one or more objects (110, 112) captured by a first camera (101); adding to the image signal (200) a map (222) comprising for respective sets of pixels of the first image (220) respective values, representing a three-dimensional position in space of a region of the one or more objects (110, 112) represented by the respective set of pixels; and adding to the image signal (200) a partial representation (223) of a second image (224) of pixel values representing one or more objects (110, 112) captured by a second camera (102), the partial representation (223) comprising at least information of the majority of the pixels representing regions of the one or more objects (110, 112) not visible to the first camera (101). Advantages are less required information for higher precision and increased usability.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method for encoding a plurality of views of an image into an image signal, for example into a compressed television signal according to one of the MPEG standards. [0002] The invention also relates to: a device for generating this signal, a receiver for receiving this signal, a method for extracting coding information from this signal so that it can be used to generate multiple views, and the highly efficient coding signal itself. Background technique [0003] The standardization of 3D image information coding is currently being studied. There are several ways to represent a three-dimensional object, e.g. as a set of voxels (e.g. popular in medical data display or inspection of industrial parts), or as captured from different directions and used by a single viewer's eyes or by Multiple view images viewed from different directions by multiple viewers or moving viewers etc. [0004] A more popular format is the left / right fo...
