Abstract

The present invention provides a method for block artifact detection and block artifact determination using multiple features in coded images and video. A method includes identifying (910) a pluralityof overlapping blocks in a picture with respect to a current block. Each of the plurality of overlapping blocks covers a portion of the current block and a portion of an adjacent block. The method further includes transforming (920) at least one of the plurality of overlapping blocks into respective coefficients corresponding to at least one of a luminance component and a chrominance component. The method also includes identifying (930) a blockartifact for the at least one of the plurality of overlapping blocks when coefficients corresponding to the at least one of the plurality of overlapping blocks are larger than a predefined value.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 877,549, filed December 28, 2006, under 35 U.S.C. 119(e). technical field [0002] The present application relates generally to image and / or video processing, and more particularly to detection of block artifacts in encoded images and video. Background technique [0003] Image or video compression artifacts are caused by digital image or video compression algorithms due to improper allocation of available bits. As one of the most objectionable compression artifacts, blocking artifacts are considered to be unwanted discontinuities at block boundaries of a compressed picture. Blocking artifacts become especially noticeable with high-definition formats and high-resolution displays. Manual positioning of artifacts by an operator as part of the re-encoding process is not feasible in many image and video encoding applications because the amount of time required to locate these blocking artifacts w...
