Embodiment Construction

[0015] Methods and apparatus for detecting and discriminating multiple simultaneous close proximity or touches of a touch surface are described. The following examples are provided to enable all those skilled in the art to make and use the claimed invention and are presented in the context of a mutual capacitance touch surface device. Variations using other types of touch surfaces such as force or light sensitive touch surfaces will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Thus, the appended claims are not intended to be limited to the disclosed embodiments but are to be accorded the widest scope consistent with the principles and features disclosed herein.

[0016] As mentioned earlier, the latest touch surface input devices are able to detect multiple objects as they approach and / or touch the touch surface. For hand-held multi-touch touch surface devices that fit in a pocket, purse, or on the head, such as portable music players, portable video players, personal digital ass...

Abstract

Techniques for identifying and discriminating between different input patterns to a multi-touch touch-screen device are described. By way of example, large objects hovering a short distance from the touch-surface (e.g., a cheek, thigh or chest) may be identified and distinguished from physical contacts to the surface. In addition, rough contacts due to, for example, ears and earlobes, may be similarly identified and distinguished from contacts due to fingers, thumbs, palms and finger clasps.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to data entry methods and apparatus for electronic devices, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for discerning various inputs of a multi-touch touch surface input apparatus. Background technique [0002] Many types of input devices currently exist for performing operations related to electronic systems. These operations generally correspond to moving a cursor and / or making selections on the display screen. Exemplary electronic systems include tablet, notebook, desktop and server computer systems, personal digital assistants, audio and video control systems, portable music and video players, and mobile and satellite phones. The use of touchpad and touchscreen systems (collectively "touch surfaces") has become increasingly popular in these types of electronic systems due to their ease of use and suitability for multipurpose operation. [0003] One particular type of touch surface is a touch screen. A ...
