The method of the present invention advantageously utilizes changes in ECG signals obtained during sleep to calculate an apnea / hypopnea index during sleep.

Breathing affects the impedance between the electrodes and thus the potential and the difference between them. The motion of the chest and abdomen changes during a respiratory event and thus changes how the impedance between the electrodes varies with respiratory effort. This results in an observable phase change between the signals derived from the ECG.
